Four men from the expedition help lower J.W. Caldwell into what they referred to as Doughnut Crater using rope. Limbert's note: "Lowering one of our party, Mr. Caldwell, down the throat of what we, Cole and I, called Doughnut Crater" in Vermillion Canyon. About sixty feet down the throat divided like an inverted letter Y. How deep it was it is impossible to even guess."
