Boise City is experiencing a period of growth and prosperity
which was only a dream a few years ago. Long-term community
development projects have been completed or are under construction
including the regional shopping center, the convention
center, the Broadway-Chinden Connector and downtown redevelopment.
The achievement of so many major goals marks a milestone
for Boise City but also emphasizes a need to identify new
horizons for the community.
To help insure a desirable future of our City, it is important
for our community to develop and provide a process for the
citizens of Boise to determine appropriate directions and goals
for the City as we enter a new era. This process should identify
citizen dreams and aspirations and compare them with the realities
of time and money. The process will attempt to answer some
very basic questions: Where are we? Where do we want to go? How
do we get there? The suggested title of this process is "Boise
Visions: Building a Great City".
Boise Visions may involve a series of city-wide forums and
some mini forums in individual neighborhoods and other integral
sectors of the community. Extensive news media involvement in
the process will be requested and specific events will be organized
to promote program activities. The key to the success of
Boise Visions will be grass roots citizen participation.
Completion of the process is expected to instigate a number of
specific policies and programs. Information gained during the
forum will be used as a basis for preparing a new comprehensive
plan for the City. Existing plans, ordinances, and policies may
also be amended as a result of the process.
The cornerstone of Boise Visions will be a steering committee
consisting of community leaders and representatives of major
components of the community. The members of this committee will
be those citizens with unquestionable credentials and track

records of community service. Therefore, I am inviting you to be
a member on the Boise Visions Steering Committee and respectfully
urge you to accept on behalf of the community.
I anticipate the Committee will function for at least 18 months
and possibly as long as 24 months. Initially, there will be a
series of monthly work sessions with staff and other appropriate
parties to determine the scope of activities and the format of
the process. During the work session phase the Committee will
have an opportunity to shape the details of the entire program.
Boise State University, the Boise Future Foundation, and the
Chamber of Commerce are ready to play an integral part in this
exciting program. Dr. John Keiser and Chamber President, Jay
Clemens, are both personally committed to its success and will
be directly involved.
I look forward to your positive acceptance of this request. If
you have any questions or need additional information about Boise
Visions, give me a call.
It is certainly important for our community's well-being that
this task be undertaken. And, for those involved it will be both
rewarding and a wonderful opportunity to understand our community
and shape its future. Boise needs your vision of the future.
