AND URBAN DE-VELOPMENT WASHINGTON D.C. 20410
~/ FOR . RELEASE
September 3, 1967
Secretary Robert c. Weaver of the U. s. Department of Housing
and Urban Development has announced approval of a $246,954 Federal advance
for survey and planning activities for the 25.5-acre Boise Central District
No. 1 project in Boise, Idaho, in Ada County. This is the first urban
renewal project in the city.
The project area is a dilapidated commercial area of about 7
square blocks containing 64 buildings, about 62 of which are obsolete and
deficient. When redeveloped, the area will contain multilevel garages and
office and commercial buildings.
As required by law1 anyone displaced by site operations will
be offered relocation in decent, safe1 and sanitary housing.
Preliminary estimates indicate that when planning has been
completed the project will require a $4,3221 205 Federal grant. In
anticipation that the city later will apply for a loan-and-grant contract,
this amount has been reserved for the project.
The Urban Renewal Program, authorized by Title I of the Housing
Act of 1949, as amended1 provides assistance to cities undertaking local
programs for the elimination and prevention of' slums and blight.
