Mr. 2dwa,rti 3hoaenbau^hf
^oisb, latino,
de<xr .-.r. linouen^a^ii;
Indeea I do remember ,/our visit, and one
or two other conferences with you at the University* Did you
take your masters decree in 'leology? 'tfhat was the suoject of your
thesis'3 Tith whom Hid you do most of your work? I have very
d1fp»rpnt estimates of the worth of various men in the department of
Geology at Washington.
In reply to your question, Chicago fills its assistantships
and instiuctorships with men of its own training. I do not
know that an exception to this has b^en made in the history of the
department, save for summer teaching. This policy extends
bv0n farther up tno suaie, for the four younger men in the
uopartiaent at present (see above) are all Ph.D. ra>n of thi.s institution. The high ran.-; of the department makes Chamberlin and
Salisbury independent of outside-trained men, and rather chary of
ta-. ing tnem on.
Men who are wording for their doctor's degree are often given
fellowships and assistantships, and in this way the work assigned to
men of this rank is performed. I presume that sucn an arrangement
isnt what you are looking for, since it costs more than it §rin^s
in, for the time being.
I wonder if your interest in the subject and confidence in your
ability to teach Geology in college has ever led you to plan for
a doctor's degree from such a school as Chicago. I wonder
further if you have scouted around in the vicinity of Boise in the
footsteps of the great Russell, and have picked up anything of real
value to the knowledge of the areal geology of the region.
